More than ever, employers need to highlight
they are an employer of choice to attract and retain quality staff. A recent Instinct
and Reason study provided important insights into the motivation of job hunters when seeking
a new role, and what is likely to keep their loyalty. The research revealed a key factor
to securing and retaining staff was to create a mentally healthy workplace. Of the employees
surveyed, 71% said a mentally healthy workplace is important when selecting a new job, with
over a third saying it was very important or essential. In fact, next to salary, offering
a mentally healthy workplace is the most important factor in attracting staff. The survey showed
employees valued a friendly and supportive work environment, more than a workplace that
delivers personal recognition, provides new challenges or is convenient to travel to.
For employees who recognise their workplace invests in mental health, 60% are more committed
to the organisation and 68% indicate they are less likely to seek employment elsewhere.
Interestingly, 45% state they had left a workplace because of poor mental health conditions.
It’s clear – employers and managers who create a mentally healthy workplace will gain a competitive
advantage through attracting and retaining quality staff. So how do you become an employer
of choice? First and foremost, businesses need to develop positive mental health policies
and communicate these at all levels of their business. These policies include training
for management and staff which enables them to better manage mental health at work. Managers
and staff must also identify threats and address these proactively. These actions should be
combined with strong promotion to prospective employees about the business’ positive culture
around mental health. By joining Heads Up, your business can take an important step in
