eClip Arts Unit Virtual Choral Warm Ups: Vowel Production

[MUSIC PLAYING] [PIANO NOTE] (SINGING) Nah, nah, nah. N-A-H. Ready– (SINGING) Nah, nah, nah. (SINGING) Neh, neh, neh. (SINGING) Neh, neh, neh. Nee. (SINGING) Nee, nee, nee. No. (SINGING) No, no, no. Nu. (SINGING) Nu, nu, nu. Nuh, nuh, nuh. (SINGING) Nuh, nuh, nuh. OK, that’s the–
when we sing the word the, T-H-E, if we have
a lot of space in there, this is the problem, because
the uh-sound, the schwa, it’s not a very attractive
thing to sing a long note on. (SINGING) Ehh, like that. So we often say (SINGING) thaaa,
if it has a lot of note on it, a lot of length. Or if it’s preceding a word
that starts with a vowel, obviously, we go (SINGING) thee. T-H-I-H. Sing that.
(SINGING) Thih, and– (SINGING) Thih. All right, we’re
going to practice our vowels a little bit. The main vowels,
or the best vowels that we use for singing
are all of our what we call our Italian vowels. And we’re going to sing
eee, ay, ah, oh, ooo. Can you sing that for me? Ready, and– (SINGING) Eee, ay, ah, oh, ooo. Beautiful. And then you’re going
to come back down again. (SINGING) Ooo, oh, ah, ay, ee. It’s much harder in
reverse, isn’t it? Starting with ooo. (SINGING) Ooo, oh, ah, ay, eee. No, ooo, oh, ah,
ay, eee is reversed. So you think of it forward, eee,
ay, ah, oh, ooo, and then ooo, oh, ah, ay, eee. All right? So it’s a little scale that
we’re going up and down. Let’s try it. Ready and– (SINGING) Eee, ay, ah,
oh, ooo, oh, ah, ay, eee. Be sure to end on eee. Does that make sense? Here we go, ready, breathe. (SINGING) Eee, ay, ah,
oh, ooo, oh, ah, ay, eee. And take a breath. (SINGING) Eee, ay, ah,
oh, ooo, oh, ah, ay, eee. Breathe. Eee, ay, ah, oh,
ooo, oh, ah, ay, eee. Eee, ay, ah, oh,
ooo, oh, ah, ay, eee. Good, we’re going
to do two more. Try and make the transition
between the vowels as smooth as you can. So we get (SINGING) eee, ay, ah,
and not (SINGING) eee, ay, ah. You can hear I’m using my
throat to start each note. So really trying
to connect them, make them as
beautiful as you can. Here we go. Thanks, Chris. And– (SINGING) Eee, ay, ah,
oh, ooo, oh, ah, ay ee. Last one, and– eee, ay, ah,
oh, ooo, oh, ah, ay, eee.
