Today is an Employer’s Expo here in
Cadillac and we have manufacturers from all over the area, businesses that have
come in. We’ve got over 50 employers and businesses here today, including
government agencies and so forth, that are all looking for good quality workers.
We produce a lot of them here at the Career-Tech Center so we’re very
excited to get them, get their face out there with our employers locally and try
to keep kids in northern Michigan. And that’s, that’s a great goal for everyone.
It just keeps the whole cycle going here and makes the entire area successful.
The students get to come in and meet the employers ask questions about their
business. We’ve taught them over the years some essential skills on how to
apply, how to meet somebody, look them in the eye, shake hands with them, and try to
sell themselves to an employer. So today is a kind of a meet and greet but we’re
going to have a lot of kids get hired out of this as well. And so it’s from all
of our programs. They come out a couple programs at a time so it’s not too
crowded, but actually get to meet employers that are tied directly into the
area that they’re the program area that they’re learning in right now. This also
allows some students to go out on co-op. And it gives employers a great
opportunity to test drive if you will their employee because hiring a known
commodity is the best way to go. And so it’s a win-win for everyone. It’s just so
exciting to have, to see the enthusiasm that our students have, but also that the
employers have. And many of our juniors aren’t eligible to be hired. But it gives
them an opportunity to look forward to what’s out there for me and maybe give
them that a little extra incentive to really work hard in their program and
become the best employee they can become. For me, it’s so exciting to see our
business and manufacturing people in here. Because CTC really is the place to
be. And for them to get in here and realize what’s going on and they can
then go out spread the word to their other manufacturing business people,
community members. So that, you know, we’re the best-kept secret in town that’s not
our intention. So to get that word out there is almost as important for us as
it is getting our students connected with employers.
