Employer Recruitment Stories – Electrical

David: my name is David Jarvis I am the general
manager of Shepherd electrical which is a leading contracting electrical
contracting company here in Canberra we specialize in large commercial projects [MUSIC] David: We currently have 13 apprentices, electrical
apprentices at varying stages we have three brand new first-year apprentices
two of whom haven’t even started technical training yet and we have eight
currently in their second and third years and the further three who are
about to complete their apprenticeships in their fourth year at the moment and
using the capstone tool [MUSIC] David: Generally we don’t advertise for recruitment we get a number of people contacting us directly by the phone or via email and we then
select those who we feel have the right attributes will then invite me in for an
interview. [MUSIC] David: Probably the most fundamental issues to have a real desire to be an
electrical apprentice and be part of the electrical trade and so we’re looking
for that in the way that they produce their resumes, CVs. It gives us an
opportunity to also assess their literacy skills and also looking at
their academic backgrounds and particularly the record of the maths and
the sciences [MUSIC] David: the interview process is fairly simple,
we will really just be searching through a general list of questions to see that
they have a genuine desire and the keenness to join the industry and they
are they are very determined to join. We’re looking for someone that’s going
to be proactive self-motivated and really wants to be part of the industry [MUSIC] David: First of all be determined, come across
with a very definitive view of what you want to do and also present yourself
well and that includes in your written work as well so when your present resume, you
may make sure it’s very clear in there what you want to do and give an
indication of your background particularly if you’ve had the
opportunity and we would recommend and we love looking for people who are often have a desire and have gained experience through work experience or a
school-based apprenticeship to work in the industry [MUSIC] David: it gives us an opportunity because we do
not use group training organizations or labor hire and gives us an
opportunity to take on an apprentice with a view for long-term employment we
can then groom that apprentice in our methods and our technology that we
utilize and also gives us an opportunity to get them into specialties at a very
early stage as well of their career
