Employer Recruitment Stories – Plastering

[MUSIC]>>KAUFMANN: Hi, my name’s David Kaufmann,
I work for Complete Fixset Plastering, it’s a plastering company. At this stage we have one. But he’s in his third year. Um, yeah. He’s through word of mouth. Um. Just knowing someone else. Not really much advertisement,
it’s usually kids ringing up all the time looking for a job. It’s usually pretty informal – you get a start date. Um. Punctuality, showing up on time.
And usually it’s anywhere from a 4-8 week trial. Depending how you go. Yeah, and what stage you can get yourself,
and what speed. And that, usually inside eight weeks, max. That’s enough time to figure out
whether someone’s cut out for it or interested enough. They have to be willing to learn and work. I think those are the biggest keys, yeah. I think, yeah, if we’re covering
both of those sort of components, you’ll do pretty well. Do your homework. Look into it, see if it’s something
you’re interested in. And don’t just do it because it’s something to do
or because a friend did it. Or you think it’s good money, or… I think if you come in with that attitude,
you’ll sort of fall apart really quickly. Um. Make sure if it’s something you’re keen on
and you’ll go a long way. I just think it’s keeping the trade alive. Keeping busy, bringing new kids through. You only need to look around – it’s everywhere. It needs to keep going,
so I think that’s the biggest benefit. Just keeping young kids coming through
and keeping it going for the next generation. For me, ah, I didn’t go all the way through school. I skipped about doing not a lot of anything. I tried for a lot of apprenticeships but missing at least Year 10 was I think
the biggest, sort of, component to getting an, an apprenticeship, um,
made it really hard for me, but for those out there
with a Year 10 certificate or more, you’ll find it a lot easier,
but in the end, I had a do or die situation,
I was, have a crack at it, the only opportunity I’ve got –
I was stagnant where I was – and I just gotta go get on with it. [MUSIC]
