How Hackney South Labour Works: The Executive Committee

Hello and welcome to ‘The Works’ Where we look at how Hackney South Labour runs and how you can make the most of being a member So far we have covered the local party meetings Next we will be looking at who organises these There are two key bodies: the EC and the LCF
In this video we’ll be focusing on the EC Hackney South’s EC runs the local party They don’t make policy decisions – those are down to the members They do the organisational stuff They work to engage members and they make sure the party represents the diverse community in Hackney Once a year the EC puts together a Development Plan for Hackney South that includes a draft budget and a series of targets to work towards in the coming year Members are asked to contribute ideas for the Development Plan around November The EC have eleven voting members We also have five coordinators who cover the following areas BAME, Youth, LGBT, Disabilities, and Trade Unions Finally secretaries from our ten branches attend the EC meetings Although they’re no open for all members, minutes are sent out every month and you can also ask your branch secretary for updates We elect our EC inthe AGM in June – all members can attend and vote Just remember to bring your membership card or a form of ID Members can also stand for positions on the EC Half of the officers must be women We encourage people from working-class backgrounds, ethnic minorities and young people to stand Details of how to stand are sent out before the meeting If you would like to stand you need to be prepared to speak for a minute or two about what can bring to the role The amount of work involved varies Ordinary members only need to attend the monthly meeting and occasionally take on other duties But the officer roles, the Chair, the Secretary, are a big commitment and have responsibilities attached It’s a good idea to talk to the person already doing the role before deciding if you want to put yourself forward We don’t have the big money that the Tories have so we have to rely on volunteers to come forward You might not want to stand for something formally But if you’re happy to donate your skills to the party, then please do get in touch We also need volunteers for canvassing and campaigning You’ll find out more about that in our next video
