It’s A Major Thing – Social Work

Hi my name is Terra and I’m a Social
Work major here at West Liberty and today I’m going to be showing you what
it’s like to be in this program I’ll be heading into my Social Work
practice class with Professor Hayes Basically in chapter 8 you’re kind of working
out everything in chapter 8 by finding a support group, doing the assignment and
attending. Are there any questions about the support group assignment? My professor
Sylvia Senften always says that the main purpose of social work is to create
change but I think it’s a human thing From a young age social work has been
present in my life constantly through personal experience, through media like
movies and things like that and I guess I just didn’t see myself anywhere else
like my personality Who I am I feel like I wouldn’t fit anywhere else. Now we’re going to my
advocacy and social justice class with doctor Senften We have the sheets that you already filled out. We need to spend just a little bit of time checking in with each other we only
made it through one of the policy debate questions The classes are typically very
small and intimate; there are about seven or eight and my junior sequence right
now and we have every single class together
it’s pretty diverse in terms of age even thoughts like we all think so
differently and it brings something to it The classes in general are very real
like we talk about a lot of real world stuff that sometimes gets depressing but
it’s essential to talk about those things and I think I like that most
about the classes Now we’re going to a social work club meeting We’ve also taken trips to Washington DC or they go down to
Charleston they haven’t been to Washington DC in a while except three of
the seniors and so I think about good opportunity for us to all go and
experience The Social Work Club places an emphasis on community and we try to
do our best to incorporate community outreach into our activities. We
fundraise for institutions like the YWCA Youth services, we like to incorporate the
community as much as possible Now we’re going to be going into my class
trauma-informed practice with Professor Hayes We’re gonna talk about how we plug
in and trauma-informed practices when we’re working with children and families
so this is kind of a broad topic From freshman to junior year you get all
of the basic knowledge that you need to be out in the world as a practicing
social worker to be During your senior year when you go into a placement with
the help of your professors you choose a place locally that you think you might
be interested in and you’ll be learning from the professionals in that
institution about what it means to be a practicing social worker in that
environment Today is the health fair on campus and
our Social Work clubs has a booth set up can you tell me about the addiction
studies minor? so here’s the paper for it After
graduation I would like to begin looking for jobs
in residential programs that’s truly where my passion lies I want to work
with teens and young adults that are going through things that people their
age normally don’t and I want to help change their view on the world and what
they can do Hopefully this gave you a look at what it’s like to be in this
program for more information check out the website
