I’m Baroness Cathy Bakewell and I’m the Liberal
Democrat spokesperson for the Department for Work and Pensions and I’ve currently been
working on the Personal Independence Payments – PIP – where the Government have changed
the regulations so that people with anxiety, psychological distress and mental illnesses
would not be able to get the higher mobility element of the Disability Living Allowance.
We’ve been fighting this in the House of Lords and moved a fatal motion a week ago last Monday
to try and defeat the Government. Sadly this was not supported by Labour, who moved a regret
motion which was much weaker and we would like everybody who cares about these people
who are quite often not able to leave their homes without somebody with them, not able
to plan a journey without support, we would like everybody to fight for this in their
communities. Perhaps through their Mind organisations, or their disability organisations. It’s really
important that we as Liberal Democrats support these people.
