Leadership skills that employers want

Nine in ten Augustana seniors say their out-of-class experiences helped them
become leaders. Augustana offers so many leadership
opportunities on campus. We even have an office of student life and leadership, OSL. Natural-born leaders just flock there. A student who wants to work on
leadership skills can check out one of OSL’s many programs, such as Emerge, our national award-winning
program for new students. They learn about their strengths as they learn
about life on campus. Many student leaders begin in Emerge. Many alumni began there, too. Augie students who want to do their own thing
become leaders, too. When your college offers nearly 200 student groups, it’s hard not to find your thing outside class. And of course, all these groups need leaders: presidents, vice-presidents, treasurers, planners. If you can’t find the group you want,
you can start your own. It’s easy. Just get a couple more students together
and make your proposal. That’s how Disc Golf Club got started. And, Black Squirrel Film Productions, Interfaith Understanding, Fishing Club,
and Clogastana. Augustana also gives grant money
to encourage leaders. For example, the Servant Leader Grant is for students to explore their passions through internships. Caroline was an intern in Marketing and Communications at a local hospital where she discovered a passion for event planning. By becoming a leader in her internship,
Caroline found her future as a leader. Augustana alumni are leaders in Fortune 500 companies, non-profits, churches, colleges, hospitals,
government, and their own businesses. Ken, Mark, and Stuart started their own Chicago-based tech consulting firm with a view of lake Michigan. And, they’re only in their twenties. Their education and mentors helped, but also, Stuart started the Augieponics food science program at Augustana. Mark was an executive director
in the Office of Student Life, and Ken was the Pledge Chair
for his fraternity. He’s the one who convinced his friends they
should start their own business. Now, he’s the CEO of their firm, 38th Street Studios, named for the
address of Augustana College. Students become a leader at Augustana. Employers find your leaders among
Augustana graduates.
