Let’s Talk Growth: The Growth Management Act (Ep. 1)

Whether you have lived here a short time
or a lifetime you know that Marysville is a growing community. Growth management is a complex subject. In this series, we’ll break down how the city manages
growth. Let’s get started. Marysville and Snohomish County are among the growing communities required by Washington state law to plan for a
future population and employment growth The Growth Management Act requires local governments to designate urban growth areas where new development is
concentrated to prevent sprawl. The GMA also directs the designation of critical areas and natural resource lands to protect the environment. So how is the
city planning for another nineteen thousand residents expected to live here
in the next 16 years? Marysville’s Comprehensive Plan establishes our urban growth areas through zoning. It also plans for utilities, infrastructure, parks,
and housing. City staff and leadership implement the comprehensive plan through capital investments and development regulations. The City of Marysville is
investing millions of dollars into public infrastructure. This includes
roads, water, sewer, stormwater treatment, parks and more to serve current and
future residents. We’re also improving the scope and quality of development
regulations. That translates to increased housing options and more businesses with family-wage jobs locating here. Do you have a question about growth management? If so let us know and we’ll do our best to answer it. Oh, and remember to
