[Doug Weisburger] Montgomery County Green Business Certification Program is a voluntary recognition program for
businesses and other organizations. It’s also an educational program, as it
provides businesses with a “green print”, a checklist of actions, for integrating sustainability into the day-to-day operations and corporate culture. [Lisa Feldt] Together we are accelerating the transition toward a greener economy, shining a light on green business
services and products, and driving a green commerce. [Benjamin Grumbels] I can’t say enough about the power innovation and the triumph of collaboration when it comes to the
environment. Environmental regulations are critically important, they’re absolutely necessary, but to get
where we want to be we need enduring, sustained
partnerships. [Isiah Leggett] I’m pleased to be here today to take another step for Montgomery County’s program, one
of the most environmental conscious communities in the country. For many in this room and many throughout our county it is Earth Day everyday. Given the variety
of businesses, the unique operations we’ve created an
umbrella program that allows businesses to choose a
certification program that is most aligned with their operations and values. There are five different certification programs from which businesses can
choose. One, is the homegrown program developed by the Montgomery County
Department of Environmental Protection. Other options include certification through nationally recognized third-party
organizations. These robust programs include B lab, Green America, Green Seal, and the Green
Restaurant Association. Let’s hear from some of the certified green
businesses to learn how they have benefited from
going green. [Juancarlo Parkhurst] Really the main reason we’ve chosen to do it is it’s who we are. We want to be good citizens, good stewards of the environment. Myself as a parent I’m very excited in terms what we can do to try to keep the world a little bit better
for the future. [Efrain Estrada] Doing the right thing the right way is something that is kind of a driver from the ownership down to new ways to staff them and they really understand that you know
we have nothing but one envionment you know taking care of it, it is
something very important, and by a business end it also gives us an edge. We say we are green and we have proof that we are green. [Barbara Ashe] So by becoming a green certified business we are able to be, really role model for other small businesses. We are able to also offer green business forums, here at the
Chamber which is great way to connect our businesses to not only information
but to each other we are small NGO, and if we can do it, so
can you. [Jim Conlon] The Green Business Certification has offered a few benefits. Our employees really enjoyed the process of having a list that was
challenging and yet do-able. We’ve got a great staff and
they’ve liked what we’ve been doing and they stick
around. Montgomery County tends to be very intelligent, very
well-educated, prudent community, and as someone who started a small business I really needed to raise the bar for
ourselves so that we could reach those consumers. [Mary Fehlig] We want to get involved in this green certification because it’s the right thing to do. We all have a role and I really
understand the role that businesses have in terms of our environmental impact. We’ve got an environmental crisis we all have to kind of step in and resolve environment stewardship is really
important to my clients so, I wanted to walk to talk and I also wanted to be able to share this certification program with them as well; it also helps build my brand and my integrity as a business. [John Jabara] I think it’s great that we’re now a part of the Montgomery County Green Business Certification program. We do energy and environmental impact
ratings for appliances, electronic products, and
even homes, so we thought it was really important that we looked at our operations and made sure that we
understood exactly what our environmental impact was and how we can improve it throughout all our activities. [Gigi Godwin] Being good environmental stewards is good for business. It makes us more
competitive, it attracts the next generation of
talent, and we all know it’s the right thing to do.
