More Labour Party nominees for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti

Within the hour, the nominations
will close for the Labour Party in the Ikaroa-Rawhiti by-election. Confirmed nominees have grown
from four to five today and it looks like more people
will put their names forward right up until the final hour. Irena Smith has the latest. The nominations close for
the Labour Party at five o’clock. Today a new horse
has joined the race, Tamati Olsen who has spent years
working in government departments. He is the fifth to put his name
forward, joining Meka Whaitiri, Henare O’Keefe, Shane Taurima
and Hayden Hape, and it’s understood
that the list will not end at 5. Labour has held the seat
for many years, and it’s predicted
they will retain it. It’s up to each nominee to put
themselves out there and like Meka, Hayden Hape is letting
the people speak on his behalf. While Labour is still deciding, the
Maori Party have got a jump start, campaigning in Hawkes Bay today. The Greens are yet to make known
who will stand for them, but some have been talking about
Marama Davidson being a possibility, but that is yet to be confirmed. Labour’s first selection meeting will be held in Lower Hutt
on Friday. Irena Smith, Te Karere.
