NDIS Disability Support Worker: Gregg Sinnamon

If you like people then it’s a
great industry to be involved with. My name’s Gregg Sinnamon
and I’m a disability support worker at Leisure Networks and
I’ve been doing this for 18 months now. (GREGG IN THE BACKGROUND:)
Do you want to go to the movies again? I worked in the resources sector
for a major organisation for 20 years. Mine wasn’t a choice of trying
to find a career change, Alcoa closed and my career ended. So I came along
for the information night and just enjoyed
what it was all about, went through some interviews
and then got the job here. It just clicked with me.
I love the breadth of what I do. I love the one on ones. For staff it’s a really
rewarding environment to work in because they’re not constrained, they’re really able to respond to people’s interests,
passions, try things. Gregg has helped me,
like he’s opened my mind to new ideas to how to present
your own artworks. He’s like, “Hey mate you love
selling your pictures and everyone loves to see them so why not
sell your pictures off on a website?” I’ve always enjoyed
working with people and it’s that people management skill, or people interaction skill
that has been the core thing I’ve been able to bring to this job. Life experience that I’ve had and the combination seem to come together
quite well to tackle this job. There are so many people out there that have been crying out
for this help for a very long time. The fact that this government
funded service is now with us, I can’t speak more highly for it
because I get to deal with the people on a daily basis
that are achieving their goals. If the only thing
I get out of a day is that the participant smiles,
laughs and generally enjoys the day then my day’s
been a complete success. Getting into this role
in the last 18 months has been one of the greatest things
I’ve ever done in my life.
