(STEPHANIE) TONIGHT IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO GET READY BEFORE HURRICANE DORIAN HITS. (LAURA) ALL WEEK LOCAL CITY GOVERNMENTS HAVE BEEN MAKING PREPARATIONS TO MITIGATE ANY POTENTIAL FLOODING. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S KAYLA GASKINS HAS MORE ON WHAT THE CITY OF NORFOLK IS DOING. (KAYLA GASKINS) THE CITY IS RAMPING UP IT’S EFFORTS TODAY TO MAKE SURE THAT THE DRAINS AND DITCHES AROUND TOWN ARE CLEAR TO MAKE SURE OUR STREETS STAY CLEAR OF FLOOD WATERS TOMORROW. WHENEVER A HEAVY STORM ROLLS THROUGH — IT’S LIKELY SOME STREET– SOMEWHERE IN NORFOLK — WILL WASH OUT. WITH A HURRICANE ON THE HORIZON — THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS HAS CREWS OUT IN FULL FORCE– CLEARING DITCHES OF OVERGROWN VEGETATION — NATS OF WEED WACKERS SWEEPING STREETS, AND — NATS OF DRAINAGE TRUCK CLEARING OUT STORM DRAINS. KYLE QUICK – STORM WATERS OPERATION MANAGER LITTER, BRANCHES, TREES, LEAVES JUST ALL SORTS OF DEBRIS. OFFICIALS THEY’RE CONSTANTLY CLEANING AND MAINTAINING THE CITY’S DRAINAGE SYSTEM — BUT DURING STORM PREP THEY DOUBLE EFFORTS. SO WHERE CREWS NORMALLY CLEAR 30 DRAINS PER DAY — THEY’RE NOW CLEARING 60. KYLE QUICK – STORM WATERS OPERATION MANAGER STARTED RAMPING UP PREPARATIONS A COUPLE DAYS AGO, SWITCHING TO 10 HOUR SHIFTS. AND NOW WITH THE BEGINNING OF THE STORM WE’LL HAVE OPERATIONAL CREWS ON THE READY THROUGH THE DURATION OF THE STORM. CLEANING DRAINS INVOLVES THIS GIANT PIECE OF MACHINERY CALLED A VACTOR TRUCK. THE CITY HAS THREE IN OPERATION TODAY. SO THEY ACTUALLY USE VACUUM EXTRACTION TO REMOVE DEBRIS FROM THE BASINS AND THE PIPES. THEY ALSO HAVE A JETTING TOOL WHERE THEY WILL ACTUALLY BREAK STOPPAGES IN THE PIPES. THEY’RE FOCUSING ON AREAS THAT REGULARLY END UP UNDER WATER — LIKE EARL STREET– WHERE FLOODING HAPPENS TO OFTEN RESIDENTS REFER TO THE AS “LAKE EARL.” AND IF YOU’RE SOMEONE WHO LIVES IN A FLOOD PRONE AREA, OFFICIALS SAY THERE ARE STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO HELP REDUCE THE CHANCE OF YOUR STREET WASHING OUT. PLEASE REMOVE ANY DEBRIS, ANYTHING FROM YOUR YARD THAT CAN WASH OUT AND BLOCK A STORM DRAIN, HELP US KEEP OUR STORM DRAINS CLEAR. OFFICIALS WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS SAY THAT THEY WILL HAVE OPERATIONAL CREWS ON HAND TOMORROW TO HANDLE THOSE IMPACTS FROM THE STORM. IN NORFOLK, I’M KAYLA
