PCC Employer Partnership Awards: Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc.

I’m a carpenter and part of the reason why
I work at Oregon Tradeswomen and why I am so passionate about working at Oregon Tradeswomen
is because if I had seen this opportunity earlier on in life it would have changed my
entire trajectory. Oregon Tradeswomen is a non-profit that prepares
women for careers in the construction trades. We work with low-income women to provide them
opportunities to enter the high skilled, high wage jobs in the construction industry. Women don’t typically access these careers. And it’s not because they’re not good at them,
it’s not because they don’t want them, they don’t know about them. And there’s this deficit between what women
are typically channeled toward and the opportunities that exist within the construction trades. So we bridge that divide. We give them the access that our culture doesn’t
lend them. It’s really exciting, all of the opportunities
that we have with Portland Community College. I think a lot of time when you’re collaborating
with other agencies, maybe you’re collaborating in one specific way and for one intended purpose
and that’s great and you come together and achieve that and you’re done. And I feel like we have so many different
collaborations and so many different projects from training level all the way up to initiatives
that we’re all engaged in doing together that it’s much more exciting than just a traditional
collaborate and then you’re done and go. Our students tend to go off into a lot of
different construction industries. Some of which we are really well connected
with in industry and some of which PCC helps us even better access those connections. PCC has been able to bridge the divide between
our per-apprenticeship program that prepares them for these entry level jobs and actual
access to industry. They’ve been able to provide our students
with certifications in welding for example that has allowed them to get jobs building
ships or building trains just right down the street here in Portland.
