PEOPLE OF COLOR CAREER FAIR THE FIRST ONE WAS HELD LAST FALL. THEY HAD 1200 CANDIDATES OF COLOR AND 28 TOP MINNESOTA EMPLOYERS THERE. THE CAREER FAIR WAS SO SUCCESSFUL THERE WILL BE A SECOND ONE NEXT WEEK. WE HAVE WITH US THE FOUNDER OF THE PEOPLE OF COLOR CAREER FAIR AND LESS KNOWLES GOT A JOB AT THAT CAREER FAIR. THANK YOU BOTH FOR COMING IN. THANK YOU FOR HAVING US. CONGRATULATIONS. THAT IS AWESOME. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE. YOU DIDN’T EVEN WANT TO GO TO THIS AT FIRST? NOT AT ALL. I WAS UNDEREMPLOYED FOR A LONG TIME. MY MOM WOKE ME UP ONE MORNING AND SAID HERE IS YOUR RESUME. I HEARD ABOUT THIS JOB FAIR ON TV. YOU ARE GOING NEXT WEEK. YOU ARE ALREADY REGISTERED. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE AND GO. THAT IS A GOOD MOM. THANK YOU MOM. WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE JOB FAIR? IT WAS A REALLY SPECIAL EXPERIENCE FROM THE BEGINNING. I EXPECTED TO HAVE A SUPERFICIAL FIVE MINUTE CONVERSATION AND GO BOOTH TO BOOTH TO BOOTH. AS SOON AS I STARTED TALKING WITH PEOPLE, THEY WERE REALLY INTERESTED IN MY BACKGROUND AND WHERE I COME FROM, MY WORK PHILOSOPHY AND ALL THAT STUFF. I ENDED UP HAVING HALF HOUR LONG CONVERSATIONS. YOU ARE A GRADUATE OF HAMLINE UNIVERSITY. YES. HOW DOES THIS HELP PEOPLE GET THEIR FOOT IN THE GROUP — IN THE.ORG? WHEN YOU HAVE 29 TOP MINNESOTA EMPLOYERS IN ONE SPOT REALLY READY AND PUTTING THEIR HANDS UP TO SAY THEY WANT TO HAVE A MORE DIVERSE WORKFORCE COME ON DOWN. EVERYBODY IS IN ONE SPOT. IT IS REALLY EASY TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY GETS AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO THEIR ELEVATOR PITCH AND LET EVERYBODY KNOW WHAT THEIR SKILLS ARE AND GET A JOB. WE KNOW COMMUNITIES OF COLOR REPRESENT ABOUT 15% OF THE POPULATION. UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS SO MUCH HIGHER IN THE MINORITY POPULATION. WHY IS THAT? I BELIEVE IT HAS TO DO MAKING SURE WE DO A BETTER JOB FROM THE TOP. OUR CEOS NEED TO BE MORE INTENTIONAL AND ARE HIRING MANAGERS NEED TO BE MORE INTENTIONAL ABOUT PUTTING PEOPLE OF COLOR IN MANAGEMENT. ONCE THAT HAPPENED THEY HIRE WHO THEY KNOW AND IN THEIR NETWORKS. THAT IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND REALLY BRING IN OTHER PEOPLE THAT DON’T LOOK LIKE YOU. WHEN YOU DO THAT IT IS A SNOWBALL EFFECT. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. WHAT KIND OF JOBS CAN PEOPLE LEARN ABOUT? EVERYTHING FROM NURSING AND HEALTHCARE, CONSTRUCTION TO FINANCE, ART AT THE BOARDWAY. WE NEED BUS DRIVERS. EVERYBODY. I AM SO EXCITED THAT U.S. BANK AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA AND COMCAST PARTNERED WITH ME ON THIS YEAR’S CAREER FAIR. WE ARE SO GLAD TO HEAR THE FIRST ONE WAS A SUCCESS.
