The only way a business can improve is to invest in people. By investing in people, by training people, giving them more skills, more knowledge And it’s not just the skills, it’s the knowledge and understanding so they can actually make their own suggestions and ideas. By investing in people, you get people that can be stimulated, be pleased that they are actually contributing and improving the production on their line. The Advanced Team Member Development has been operating for about six years now. We work very closely with the College of North West London. It’s started off mainly as an NVQ and then we actually got involved in the apprenticeship programme. Where we introduced English, maths and ICT and it really gives the ATMs, our Advanced Team Members, an actual Level 2 apprenticeship qualification. The Advanced Team Member Development scheme increased my skills and knowledge, and having engineering, maintenance and installation qualification, now I am able to look at the fault and better understand the components that may affect it. And also, this has greatly helped me too with my problem-solving process in drilling down into possible root causes. The retention here of ATMs is very, very good and we’re very pleased with that. They enjoy the role. They can see there’s an opportunity to develop into a Team Manager or go to the Engineering route. Now, if you have a problem on the line you have an ATM who’s trained in engineering tasks and skills that can make a decision. And actually, where they’re equipped and where they’re trained, and they understand that, they can carry out that task and get that machine up and running. So, the downtime of the machine is greatly improved. The scheme stands out for me because of the scale of the programme that they’re running. They are putting a very high percentage of their Team Members through this process, and it’s the scope of it as well. It’s having an impact in terms of helping individuals to progress in their careers, get promotions, move on to more advanced job roles, and developing their lives outside of work as well. It’s very much about improving the business performance through making a long-term investment in the staff. Everybody wins, that’s what I like about it. Because there’s lots of people behind the scenes, that do lots of work to make this whole programme run smoothly. There’s some ATMs, they thought, they struggle, and suddenly they’re eager, they want more, and they’re really enthusiastic. It’s made a massive difference to their way of working out on the floor.
