Tips for Providing References to Potential Employers

I’ll be sharing tips for how to choose,
provide, and prep references. First, we’ll talk about picking references. It’s important to choose people who are
excited to speak positively on your behalf and who can vouch for your
on-the-job performance and work ethic. Take into consideration each person’s
communication and interpersonal skills as both the content and delivery of the
reference are both important. You may choose to use different references
for different positions depending on who can best speak to your fit
for the opportunity. Now that you know how to choose
references, how do you provide them to an employer? Two things that you don’t want to do:
do not add a line that reads, “references upon request” to your
resume, or add a reference list to it, unless the employer requests
that you do so. What you do want to do is provide your
references on a separate sheet of paper. As you can see on this
sample reference list, you’ll include your name and your
references’ current names, organizations, job titles, email addresses,
telephone numbers, and possibly their relationship to you. For example,
supervisor or research project mentor. Let’s move on to preparing your reference
to speak positively on your behalf. In some cases, you may need the reference
immediately, in other cases, you might need it at some point in the future.
When you’re ready to embark on your search, contact references you haven’t
spoken to in a while to confirm they are still able to serve as a reference
for you. When you reach the point in the interview process where you think references
are going to be contacted, give them a heads-up. Provide them
with the following: a job description, your resume and cover letter,
what you think the caller is going to want to talk about, and how they
can be most helpful to you. I hope these tips
help you in your search.
