Trump ‘on the verge’ of losing support from businesses: Dave Dodson

BLINKED FIRST, WHETHER THAT MATTER OR NOT. SOMETHING ISN’T JIBING WITH THESE STORIES. A REMINDER IF WE NEED IT, THESE MARKETS HAVE ABUSIVE SITUATION, BEST I PUT IT, BASED ON PROSPECTS FOR DEAL WITH CHINA. JUMPING WHEN IT LOOKS GOOD. TUMBLING WHEN IT LOOKS BAD. TO TAKE IT TO THE PRESIDENT’S OFTEN INCONSISTENT MUSINGS ON THIS SUBJECT. NOTHING AGAINST HIM, WHAT HE IS SAYING, HE IS INK YANKING SOMEBODY’S CHAIN ON ALL OF THIS. OPINIONS AND VIEWS THAT SEEM TO CHANGE BY THE HOUR AND THAT IS NOT SITTING WELL WITH THOSE WHO TRADE SOME OF THESE BIG INTERNATIONAL STOCKS WITH APPLE EXPOSURE TO THAT CORNER OF THE GLOBE. LET’S GET THE READ ON ALL OF THIS WITH LEE SPIECKERMAN, STANFORD SCHOOL OF BUSINESS LECTURER DAVE DODSON. DAVE TO YOU FIRST. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE IMPORTANCE WHETHER THE PRESIDENT GOT IT WRONG OR NOT WHEN THE CHINESE MAKING A CALL? THE TALKS ARE STILL ON FOR SEPTEMBER SO SHOULD WE LEAVE IT AT THAT?>>I ACTUALLY THINK IT’S A PRETTY BIG DEAL, NEIL F WE CAN’T AGREE WHETHER A PHONE CALL TOOK PLACE, HOW WILL WE POSSIBLY GET A NEGOTIATION OR TRADE AGREEMENT TOGETHER?ç THINK ABOUT THE THINGS, ON FRIDAY THE PRESIDENT OF CHINA IS AN ENEMY. ON MONDAY HE IS A GREAT LEADER. ON TUESDAY WE’RE ARGUING WHETHER OR NOT A PHONE CALL WAS MADE OR NOT, WE’RE SO FAR AWAY FROM HAVING A TRADE AGREEMENT. THIS IS FROM THE PERSON WHO IS THE MASTER OF DEAL-MAKING. WE MADE TWO CATASTROPHIC ERRORS. I’M IN FAVOR OF TRYING TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD, MAKING SURE THAT CHINA’S UNFAIR TRADE PRACTICES ARE PUT TO REST. WE MADE TWO CATASTROPHIC ERRORS. THE FIRST ONE WE DECIDED TO FIGHT A TRADE WAR WITH EVERYBODY ALL AT ONCE, INSTEAD OF PULLING THE REST OF THE COUNTRIES TOGETHER, FIGHTING A UNITED FRONT WITH CHINA. OUR BEEF WITH CHINA IS THE SAME BEEF OTHER COUNTRIES HAVE. THE SECOND THING ERRATIC BEHAVIOR WITH THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY. IT IS ANNOYING, FRUSTRATING, ONCE WE GET THROUGH IT, EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE. THAT IS NOT THE REAL PROBLEM, NEIL. THE REAL PROBLEM I SEE, DONALD TRUMP IS ON THE VERGE OF LOSING THE SUPPORT OF THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, NOT WALL STREET, NOT THE INVESTMENT WORLD, BUT THE GUY WHO IS THE SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGER AT JOHN DEERE OR AT HOME DEPOT WHO HAS TO MAKE DECISIONS. THIS IS GETTING VERY FRUSTRATING FOR THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE THEY DON’T KNOW WHETHER CHINA IS AN ENEMY OR A GREAT LEADER OR NOT. ONCE HE LOSES THE SUPPORT OF BUSINESS, CHINA CAN WAIT US OUT, THEY KNOW THEY CAN MAKE IT TO NOVEMBER 2020. NEIL: LEE, YOU’RE DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW HERE BUT I DID WANT TO ASK YOU WHETHER THE PRESIDENT RISKED JUMPING SHARK ON THISç TRYING TO REEXERCISE TH ON THISç TRYING TO REEXERCISE TE EMERGENCY POWERS ACT DURING THE CARTER YEARS IN 1977, THAT WOULD BLOCK COMPANIES ACTIONS IN THIS CASE, DEALING WITH CHINA. THAT IS WHERE, TO THE PROFESSOR’S POINT THE PRESIDENT MIGHT HAVE ALIENATED HIS BASE OF BUSINESS INTERESTS WHO LIKE PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING ELSE HE HAS DONE WITH TAX CUTS, REGULATORY RELIEF, HE COULD BE KILLING THAT RELATIONSHIP WITH JUST THAT PROPOSAL, WHAT DO YOU THINK?>>WELL, I THINK FIRST OF ALL PRESIDENT TRUMP’S REAL BASE ARE WORKING PEOPLE, THE WORKERS IN THOSE STATES LIKE WISCONSIN, PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO, THAT HAD BEEN VOTING DEMOCRATIC, VOTED FOR BARACK OBAMA, THAT IS HIS BASE. NOT WALL STREET AND THESE OTHER BUSINESSES. AMERICAN BUSINESS IS VERY IMPORTANT BUT I DISAGREE WITH DAVE. THE ISSUE IS NOT JUST CHINA. WE HAVE A 70 BILLION-DOLLAR GOODS TRADE DEFICIT WITH JAPAN, GERMANY AND MEXICO. 60 TO 70 BILLION, ACTUALLY EVEN MORE WITH MEXICO. SO WE CAN’T JUST UNITE AGAINST CHINA. CHINA IS THE WORST — NEIL: IT’S A GOOD THING BECAUSE HE IS FIGHTING WITH EVERYONE, LEE. HE IS FIGHTING WITH EVERYBODY. THAT IS THE PROBLEM. YOU WANT TO PICK AND CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES?>>WORLD IS UPSIDE DOWN. PRESIDENT TRUMP IS CORRECTLY SAID WE’VE BEEN THE WORLD’S PIGGYBANK. WE CANNOT AFFORD PARADIGM FOR TRADE IS TERRIBLE FOR0A HOSING AMERICAN WORKERS FROM ALMOST EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD UNFORTUNATELY. SO THE WAY TO SIMPLIFY IT, I DO AGREE WITH DAVE ON THIS, WE DO NEED TO MAKE IT CLEAR WHAT OUR PLAN IS, WHERE WE’RE GOING. LET’S DO WHAT WE DID WITH PICKUP TRUCKS IN THE 1960S. WE IMPOSED A PICKUP TRUCK IMPORTS. LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENED. THE THREE TOP SELLING VEHICLES IN THE UNITED STATES ARE PICKUP TRUCKS. SO THEY’RE VERY AFFORDABLE BY THE MIDDLE CLASS. THE ASIAN PICKUP TRUCK MANUFACTURERS MAKE THEIR TRUCKS HERE IN THE UNITED STATES, EMPLOYING THOUSANDS OF WELL-PAID WORKERS WITH FULL BENEFITS. MAKING GREAT INCOMES. THAT IS GREAT FOR MIDDLE CLASS AMERICA AND AMERICAN WORKERS. LET’S ANNOUNCE WE’LL HAVE A 15% UNIFORM TARIFF ON ALL IMPORTED GOODS FROM ALL COUNTRIES. NEIL: STICK TO REALITY RIGHT NOW WHAT WE’RE DEALING WITH RIGHT NOW.>>THAT IS REALITY. COULD BE REALITY. NEIL: BUT IT IS NOT RIGHT NOW.>>IT WILL BE. NEIL: I’M TELLING YOU IT IS NOT HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. SO, PROFESSOR WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU — BOY, OH, BOY. THE PRESIDENT IS SAYING RIGHT NOW, PROFESSOR, RIGHT NOW, XI XINPING IS A BRILLIANT MAN. LAST WEEK HE WAS SORT OF LIKE OUR ENEMY AS LIST, ALONG WITH THE CHAIRMAN OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE. I’M WONDERING WHETHER HE IS IMPERILLING HIS OWN CHANCES OF SUCCESS BY BLOWING UP HIS OWN PROGRESS?>>ç I THINK HE IS. YOU THINK ABOUT, LEE, YOU MENTIONED STATES LIKE, YOU KNOW, WISCONSIN, OHIO, YOU GOT TO GET OUT THERE AND VISIT THEM, BECAUSE SOYBEAN FARMERS ARE GETTING SLAUGHTERED. IT IS NOT JUST TEMPORARY. WHAT IS HAPPENING AS A RESULT OF TRADE WAR BEING MISHANDLED, SOYBEAN CAPACITY IS BEING EXPANDED IN RUSSIA, KAZAKHSTAN AND BRAZIL. THAT CAPACITY WILL NOT GO AWAY. THE FARMERS WILL GET DECIMATED. YOU’RE RIGHT, LEE, THAT IS DONALD TRUMP’S BASE. HE IS GOING AFTER THEM, HURTING THEM PERMANENTLY. IN TERMS OF HOW HE IS HANDLING THE TRADE WAR HE NEEDS TO SEND A CLEAR SIGNAL TO BUSINESS THIS IS THE PROGRESSION WE’LL TAKE. WE’LL ESCALATE IT IF CERTAIN THINGS DON’T HAPPEN. ERRATIC BEHAVIOR IS FRUSTRATING FOR BUSINESS. IN TERMS OF THE 15% ACROSS THE BOARD TARIFF, LOOK I AGREE THAT JOBS HAVE BEEN LOST IN THE UNITED STATES BUT WE –>>3 1/2 MILLION.>>WE HAD THIS BAD HABIT FOR ALMOST A GENERATION OF BLAMING OUR PROBLEMS ON EVERYBODY ELSE. THE FACT IS, IT IS NOT EVERYBODY EVERBODY’S’S, WE HAVE OPIOID CRISIS. NOT EVERYONE’S FAULT EDUCATION SYSTEM. WE CALL IT RUST BELT FOR A REASON. GO TO CHINA, AREA ABOVE HONG KONG, SHANKING HIGH REGION THEY INVESTED IN INFRASTRUCTURE. THOSE THINGS MAKE YOU PRODUCTIVE. WE CANNOT TARIFF OUR WAY BACK TO BE PRODUCTIVE.>>EXCUSE ME, DAVE. NEIL: GO AHEAD, LEE.>>THIS PROBLEM BEGAN IN THE 1980S, EARLY ’70s, WE ALLOWED JAPAN TO DUMP STEEL IN THE U.S. THAT CHINA TOOK BOOK FROM JAPAN, PUT IT ON STEROIDS. THEY HAVE BEEN DUMPING GOODS INTO THIS COUNTRY. YES WE CAN TARIFF OUR WAY BACK TO LEVEL PLAYING FIELD. TARIFFS ARE ENABLED US TO BUILD OUR INDUSTRIAL ECONOMY FOR MOST OF OUR HISTORY. OUR FOUNDING FATHERS, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, BELIEVED STRONGLY IN TARIFFS. NEIL: LEE, YOU MAKE A VERY GOOD ARGUMENT, YOU’RE GOOD ON THAT. DO YOU WORRY THAT THE PRESIDENT –>>IT IS SIMPLE. NEIL: IT MIGHT BE BUT I’M JUST TELLING YOU THE PRESIDENT IS ALL OVER THE MAP. EVERY TIME YOU COME ON WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO SAY.>>I AGREE. NEIL: I ADMIRE THAT THE PRESIDENT IS ALL OVER THE MAP ON THIS.>>HE NEEDS TO BE SIMPLE. HE KNOWS WHAT HE BELIEVES –>>LEE, WOULD I SAY THIS TO YOU. FIRST OF ALL THE PROBLEM WITH DOING ACROSS THE BOARD TARIFFS, WHAT WILL YOU TELL THE NATURAL GAS INDUSTRY IN TEXAS WHEN THEY CAN’T EXPORT BECAUSE THEY’RE NOT COMPETITIVE? WHAT WILL YOU TELL FARMERS IN IOWA AND –>>WE HAVE $800 BILLION GOOD TRADE DEFICIT.>>LET ME FINISH.>>WE HAVE $800 BILLION GOODSç DEFICIT. YOU CAN’T — NEIL: TO MAKE THAT POINT, YOU’RE SAYING WHAT?>>YOU’RE LEAVING OFF AN IMPORTANT NUMBER DAVE.>>LEE, I WILL GIVE YOU A CHANCE. THERE ARE SECTORS OF THE ECONOMY THAT WOULD BE SERIOUSLY HURT BY THIS ACROSS THE BOARD TARIFF. THE SECOND THING –>>SECTORS.>>DO ACROSS THE BOARD. PLEASE LET ME FINISH, IF YOU DO ACROSS THE BOARD TARIFF WHAT YOU’RE BASICALLY SAYING LOOK WE CAN TWEET OUR WAY INTO PRODUCTIVITY. THE REST OF COUNTRIES WILL RESPOND. THEY WILL RESPOND IN KIND THIS STATIC ANALYSIS WE DO A TARIFF, ALL OF SUDDEN THE WHOLE WORLD WILL COME TO THEIR KNEES AND SURRENDER TO US IS NOT HOW THE REAL WORLD WORKS. IF YOU WANT EVIDENCE OF THAT, LOOK WHAT WE’VE DONE FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. WE WENT TO CHINA AND WE TWEETED SOME TARIFFS AND EXPECTED THEY WERE GOING TO COME TO THEIR KNEES. THEY HAVE RESPONDED AS HAS REST OF WORLD. THAT DYNAMIC PROCESS HAPPENS IN TRADE NEGOTIATIONS. I APPRECIATE THAT, MAYBE AROUND LINCOLN’S TIME THIS WOULD HAVE WORKED THE WORLD IS WAY MORE COMPLEX. NEIL: I COVERED IT DURING LINCOLN’S TIME, IT DIDN’T WORK. LEE, QUICK ANSWER TO THAT.>>WE ALREADY PICKED UP $30 BILLION IN ADDITIONAL TARIFF REVENUE. IF WE HAD A 15% UNIFORM TARIFF, TALK ABOUT STATIC ANALYSIS, THIS FREE TRADE DRIBBLE THAT HAS BEEN LAPPED UP BY MOST OF THE MEDIA UNFORTUNATELY AND A LOT OF BUSINESS PEOPLE IS RIDICULOUS. THE TRUTH IS, THAT WE WOULDç GAN $3 TRILLION IN GOVERNMENT REVENUE WITH A 15% TARIFF — NEIL: DO YOU THINK CHINA IS PAYING THAT, NO, NO, LEE, DO YOU THINK CHINA IS PAYING THAT 30 BILLION?>>I THINK IT IS ATTACHED TO THE GOODS AND INDIRECTLY THEY ARE, BECAUSE FIRST OF ALL A LOT OF THEIR COMPANIES ARE — NEIL: IT IS NOT SO. I LOVE YOU DEARLY. IT IS NOT SO.>>YOU’RE DOUBLE COUNTING.>>EXCUSE ME ONE SECOND.

  • Corporations escalate with prices of products which costs a fraction of it
They want to sell products like
    “ snake oil “

  • The only way to make any country prosperous is to ensure their working-class people are well looked after and not used as rag-dolls like most politicians treat their working-class people. Buy and hire your own. If a sandwich is going to cost you a dollar dearer in one of your own lunch-bars and you know you can afford it, buy it because the owner of the shop isn't trying to rip you off but merely ensuring he's able to cover his cost and to pay his workers an affordable wage. So says the same for the grocery-shop owner, the book store owner, the clothing store owner and so on and so on. The real people who look after one another where they live. The only way for life to be simple and easy as this. Is that everyone must simply be true and honest to themselves wholeheartedly. That no race card or religious act of the person standing before them is but just as equal as they are.

  • Neville Bennett says:

These talking heads sometimes give comments that seems to confuse people .How can he be fighting for better trade deals and the abandoned him? We need men with guts and patriosm to do these deals.

  • If the criticism of President Trump picking fights with all of the nations we have trade deficits with has any validity then it should stand up to the scrutiny of where are we at now vis a vi those nations. Currently, President Trump has a new agreement with Canada and Mexico awaiting Congressional approval. He has a new agreement with South Korea and just announced a new agreement with Japan. That leaves Europe and China as the only large trade deficits that have not been addressed. Four out of six doesn't seem like failure to me. Ask yourself if the European Union is more or less likely to sign a free trade agreement with the US if it sees itself as leverage for an agreement between China and the US. European's already share many of the same concerns about China as America. America doesn't have to sell out her own interests just to get the Europeans to cooperate against China. Europeans already have the incentives to cheer America's campaign against Chinese mercantilism. Once President Trump signs a free trade deal with the UK the US will be in an even better negotiating position with the EU especially as we strategically pick our fights against members of the EU which do not share Germany's vision of a new form of uber alles.

  • Life In The Faith Lane says:

It's going to be beautiful when Trump turns out right again. Look at what's happened since he took office from the abysmal Obama and never get tired of winning. The support of business? The founder of Home Depot, a very big business, is one of Trump's biggest cheerleaders. Fox…don't go Left on us.

  • China keeps showing interest of a deal than pulling out to cause doubt amongst Trump supporters against Trump, to weaken his voting base. It's a technique used by the Chinese to break the moral of the competitors supporters.

  • All of this BS speculations are going nowhere. Look at what President Trump has accomplished. These liberals just want US to fail in spite of Trump Nation is winning.

  • Pure B.S. Don't have a clue about China. Fine, let China do what they want. I'm so tired of hearing these globalist whining. Just shut up already.

  • oh, shut up. one of the reasons we cant agree if a phone call was made has to do with people like you flapping their gums. calling our president a liar all of the time. how can there be any confidence in anything? stop trying to paint him as an idiot, he never says anything without reason. weather you fools can figure it out or not. a little faith goes a very long way.

  • those that disagree with trump should just run for president on 2020. in the meantime, just let the man do what he do best.

  • Dodson's argument is absurd given that last week Trump issued a clarion call to all businesses to start looking for another supplier, other than China. Cavuto is irritating for not pointing that out. Both of them come across as globalist shills.

  • An interview where the interviewer keeps saying “I’m telling you” – why bother having guests on the program when he knows everything.

  • Unless your an Idiot – Everyone knows china has Cheap Slave Labor and All these Companies around the World that Manufacture or sell goods are taking advantage of the People of China that make all the Products.

  • Losing support? If they're that weak let them go. This president has done more for businessea than any other. The tax cuts alone, trade deals incentives, this report is wrong. What are BUAINESSES going to do , put Bernie in office, HEHE, good luck. Trump 2020/

  • Remember one person is achieving a real difference while others are there to analyse the outcome of the difference.Better stick with the doer than the talker!

  • Trump made all of them richer with the GOP $1.7 Trillion tax cut and ending environment regulation, so they don't have to pay millions to "clean" their waste before dumping it.

They have and always will vote Republicans get their tax cut and to have more environment regulation, so they don't have to pay millions to "clean" their waste before dumping it.

CHINA ISN'T PAYING THE TARIFFS, CONSUMERS ARE. Because to keep profits up they pass the cost down to the importers and they pass it down to the consumers.

  • It's amazing how these expert dealmakers come out NOW to criticize the President's dealmaking.
WHERE WERE YOU ALL THESE DECADES WHEN CHINA was screwing us? NOW you're an expert?
NOW you have a better way?
Go back under your rock. Go back with your head in the sand and let OUR PRESIDENT deal with China!

  • the only one who ever called trump a "master dealmaker" was trump, nobody who's ever worked with him or known him calls him that

  • Well then, I guess it's a good thing that the American People and not businesses have the vote. We're fed up with all the profiteering and corruption on the part of our businesses just like with our corrupt politicians they're in bed with! Maybe if Libertarian economics created the utopia the business community claimed they did we wouldn't need to tariff China right now to make things fair again.

  • The truck tariffs were a failure because the US manufactures would not compete, foreign manufactures came to the Us while US manufactures leave. The tariffs had nothing to do with anything because they didn't come to the US until 1990 dumbass, 20 yrs after the tariffs were gone.

  • Trump is hurting China regarding soy beans ..or China has targeted the soy bean farmers to hurt Trump. Trump should continue to pay them with the tariff money and then pay them with those funds to change crops.

  • Fruits and vegetables rotting in the fields because trump wants to deport mexican workers picking in the fields…Farmers miss us Mexicans

  • A 15% tariff on all imports imposed on all nations exporting to the USA , sounds great?
Just expect that every nation will also impose a 15% tariff on all US exports in return.

  • I was taught tariffs don’t work but I don’t think these countries left the US any choice. They’ve been stealing our lunch and laughing in our faces forever. Our politicians have been selling us down the river to feather their own nests forever. That’s why the effects of the tariffs are felt at all. Foreigners own the US in every way, shape and form.

  • The only business support our President will lose are the American traders doing business in China, i hope those business lose everything.

  • Thanks from China for the 30 year trade surplus. We bought gold with the dollars. The other dollars will be flooding markets soon, we hope Noah built a good boat.

  • US is going to the dogs. It is too late to blame others for your laziness and poor leadership. US is on the decline and China is on the rise. It is an inevitability that Trump’s silly tariffs will not be able to solve. Trump may not even survive the next election.

  • Christophe Blanchi says:

The Art of the Deal …. Trump had 7 bankruptcies and will do the same think with the US. Trump will BS his way through everything and will take the countries with him. Trump is clearly the worse business man in US history and the GOP elected him. Trump's real base has had next to no advantage from Trump's tax cuts. The 1% made like bandits and the latest indexing of the capital gain tax cut will benefit the 1% even more. Republicans have completely repudiate free markets. The tariffs on agriculture has destroyed the US farmers. China is not going to buy anything from US Farmers anytime soon. Farmers, Trump has destroyed you chance to export on the world markets. Guess who destroyed the industrial base? The GOP with free markets and destroying all workers rights and until Trump came along, Fox News was all for this.

  • OC Vegas Property says:

So so sick of hearing “jumping the shark…”. If you get paid to speak come up With some original lines pence in a while.

  • No kidding, greed sold us out to China and it wasn't just democrat companies who left and moved. Poor people & working class gripe about the greed of the rich and yet that same greed in them wants the cheapest price so they continued to support the companies who ditched us by buying those Chinese made products. I did without them or paid more. I'm not going to die if I don't have a tv in every room or if every kid doesn't have a cell phone or any game system for that matter. Stop sniveling like your woosies and be the tough Americans you claim to be, unreal!

  • this guys talking too much I don't think he's got his economics right the country can rebounce very quickly as consumers need the product soya bean who cares changed their industry it's not the American problem that they've put too much soya bean hello changed the industry and I'm pretty sure you can use so you're being for many other things and start selling start selling to other countries I'm pretty sure a lot of the countries are going to be on the same boats because China is corrupt you cannot deal with China that use it a different system their system is to break countries..

  • No they do not change by the hour. He is trying to deal with a country who has taken advantage of us for many years. Stop trying to aggrevate the situation. He is not loosing their support. China is our ENEMY…support our president. Perhaps China is receiving bad advice from the previous members of Obama's administration. Have Dems sign the new trade deal for Mexico, Canada and America. Perhaps, you should call into account all the MSM that are trying to make nothing work for America. Pehaps, we should help strengthen our position by supporting our president. He is not ALL over the map. He is doing a GRET job….support frim MSM would help.
