Use The Fundamentals of Photography To Produce A Great Video

H everybody …welcome! Today’s been an
interesting day this rainy morning. I started out the day getting out in the
rain to go meet my friend Bruce. Bruce if you’re on here hi and thanks again. Bruce
and I met at a coffee shop Max came along with us
Bruce is a professional cameraman and professional photographer I guess I
should say first I hope I didn’t insult you by calling you a cameraman.
Anyway it was dark, it was raining, and I wasn’t sure we were gonna have enough
light to make a video Bruce and Max and I met to talk to Bruce about his
business and what his goals are and where he wants to go with his business
and then I said Bruce I have a question for you. How would you
like to do a live video with me and just give some of your expertise to my
audience and give them some tips about lighting and how to make a really good
quality video. So thank you Bruce! He agreed to do that and actually I filmed
it on my smartphone the whole thing is done with no special equipment no
additional lighting and remember we had black skies out there but we were
sitting right in front of a big glass window and we had light coming in and
I’m gonna share the video with you either way this time right side up oh we
shall we hope we’re still working on getting that downloaded for you to see
but anyway a couple of tips about preparing for this video and one of the
things I want to add in addition to what Bruce is going to share with you by the
way it’s Bruce Hinson if any of you need a professional photographer or want to
learn from Bruce he is developing a course to teach you how to do this
though Bruce and I have kind of the same thought process and let’s teach people
how they can do it so anyway and we’re sitting there finished up our meeting
with the business aspect that we wanted to talk to Bruce about and then we went
over by the window to be closer to the window
I have brought an auxilary you know one of those little round diva lights just
in case it was too dark but as it turned out we didn’t need it so we didn’t use
that the natural light coming in from that big window worked perfectly
we set up the camera in a tripod that holds a smartphone and you might want to
invest in one of those you don’t have to right now but it holds the camera steady
you don’t want a wobbly picture and people getting seasick from your moving
the camera everywhere and you’re just not being able to hold it steady in your
hands so anyway we had the tripod sitting on the table right in front of
us with the light coming into our faces the camera was just a little more than
an arm’s length away from us and it got it got us both in the frame when we shot
it horizontally rather than vertically up and down and I know there is a way to
turn it around and actually I submitted a question to Facebook but we used
another tool to turn it around for you in the replay but I know there’s a way
to do that in facebook so I’m gonna have to share that with you as soon as I
figure it out so it’s always a learning process one of the thing I wanted to
show you first and I’m going to share my page to show you a message I got today
then I think it’s real because this is something let’s say I
want to go to my group so I’m gonna go over here to manage groups and go to my
pedal power group and by the way if you want to be a member of the pedal power
group here are the kind of qualifications number one you are a
business owner who wants to use social media marketing but you need to learn a
few more things about it first and you also want to be in a group with
like-minded people who have some of the same if not all of the same concerns and
issues about social media marketing and using that to promote your business
that’s what the pedal power group is all about I am giving you daily tips videos
updates on what’s going on with the different social media platforms and
then we share with each other we support each other I encourage the group to ask
questions there is no dumb question we’ve all either been aware a beginner
is our we are there right now so again there aren’t there is no such thing as a
dumb question so that’s the purpose of the group and to be respectful you know
no shaming or bullying or you know making fun of anybody that kind of goes
as duh that’s of course those are the rules so anyway if you want to join you
just go to pedal power group and submit by clicking on join group and that will
give you three questions to answer and the three questions are basically you
know what is your biggest challenge in using social media marketing to
your business and then some other just kind of general questions and then will
you agree to abide by the rules of the group so you then submit those and I
review your request and then as long as you’re a good fit for the group
I accept your request and you voilá are a member of the group anyway what I
was going to show you in this PEDLL Power Group post that I made I think we
started the group maybe three months ago two months ago anyway it’s still pretty
new and as of today we have 58 members all of whom are interested in what
you’re interested in and I got this message today from my friend Sarah
Wallace so Sarah thank you for letting me share it and it said this I don’t
know if you’ll be able to read this on your screen but basically it says most
people don’t want to start because they don’t want to be seen starting at the
bottom don’t be most people and this quote came
from Jay Shetty and I think it’s where a lot of people are for several different
reasons one of those reasons is those self-limiting beliefs it is I’m not sure
I can do this I’m a little afraid of this and it has to be perfect before I
put myself out there well let me just dispel all of those myths number one you
certainly are capable of doing this and it’s not rocket science it just requires
a little bit of learning number two you are capable of getting it done and
creating some really engaging benefits for promoting your company
by getting those people that are your ideal customers to know to like and to
trust you before you ever start selling to them so if you are making this key
mistake and putting out posts whether you’re boosting posts or just putting
organic post up or if any of your running ads don’t start selling to
people before you have established a relationship with them first they need
to know you to like you and trust you before they will ever consider buying
from you and then I think one of the other things that inspired me about
Sarah’s quote that I shared in the group was that so many of us are so fearful of
get getting started and waiting for it to be perfect that it just never happens
and how sad is that and I want to tell you my own personal struggle with that
real quickly if I had followed this advice I would have had this going
probably two years earlier and I actually got it out there as most of you
know had just launched my first course and I worked on it for a year because it
needed to be perfect and the truth is it didn’t need to be
perfect because here’s something very important and I shared this with Bruce
this morning that I’ve already changed what I initially thought the course was
going to be because I’m listening to the people who are my students now and I’m
adjusting the course according to how they’re learning it how they are
implementing it and I changed what the timetable of my
course is I added another module to help explain in much more detail and give
them more value in terms of how do they write their story because what we want
to do in all of our social media marketing is tell stories to make our
message resonate with our audience so telling the story requires planning and
it requires knowing in what order you need to put things what are the elements
you need to put into that story and how do you make it touch people’s hearts so
there’s a real technique to it and that was just one of the things and as we go
along I’m revising redoing taking some things out that now that I know my
customers wants and needs that I need to make it what they want not what I
thought they needed does that make sense to you well one other thing I wanted to
share was and do we have it ready yet max it’s almost there
I may have to just put it up for you in the replay actually rather than wait for
it I think that’s what we will do so all right next to sing one one more minute
or two I’ll I’ll buy a little bit of time here I’ll stop the share and come
back on the screen with you by the way don’t you love my lovely setup over here
I have to tell you the story about why you’re seeing the back of my computer
over here you know my dog our dog next to us is
happening when I call him not when he’s good he’s my dog when he’s really bad
he’s Max’s stuff nagisa’s dog is outside in the rain and
the mud right now barking to get in you may have heard him in the background
well one of the things he did a regular basis was come over here under my work
area under the table and sit in all my wires well as he sat yeah you hear him
answer as he sat there he would turn off the computer he would unplug my screen
he would unplug my keyboard and my mouse and I would just scream bloody murder at
him because it was usually right in the middle of man doing something critical
so family this past weekend Max and I worked and unplugged everything and put
the computer from the floor over to here so the dog could not get on the wires
now we have all of these lovely wires over here at least curly can’t step on
them all so it’s a temporary fix well next it doesn’t look like we’re
gonna get it ready and all right we’re gonna try one more thing if this doesn’t
work I will okay is it still upside down okay all right bear with me a second who
can share let’s see we’re gonna share screen where is my share screen here
only host the only host now let me try to find I need to go to Google so I’m
gonna come down with this oops I can’t minimize that when I’m recording
I can’t get to Google max nope I can’t without
hang on here check out check your email I just sent it to your trust okay that’s not it that double click okay all
right we’re done Travis we’ll edit this part out on the see if you got it just
got an email from me since you like no it’s not there okay we’re gonna end it
no just show it upside down no yes show it upside down I’m not gonna upset
we’re giving in now let’s go to video you can do it on baby I can’t get to
Vimeo sure you can double here let me do that it’s right there all right I just
got it in the email all right all right click that leg all right
believe it or not it came here in the nick of time you need to see how husband
and wife work together everyday in a business they own together hi everybody
this is Jackee Schwartz and I have a special guest with me today
Bruce Hinson. Bruce is a friend who is also a professional photographer so what
we’re going to be talking about today and Bruce is going to be giving you some
tips about how to take great pictures and great videos and lighting and just
cool stuff you need to know to get some good images so I’m gonna let you
take it away Bruce and tell them whatever you want to tell them to make some
good stuff. There are essentially five things that one you would want to keep
in in mind when photographing they all revolve around the whole idea of what
attracts the eye what how does the I connect with a brain level block it
boils down to this your first thing is you want a great subject something that
will engage the person that your viewer you want to engage them so the subject
has to be something that they’re interested in sure that subject needs to
be not only interesting but somehow attractive to them if it’s something
that’s interesting but gruesome then maybe not even well Halloween might be a
good way to deviate from that I call it point of greatest contrast whatever is lightest or brightest in the scene is
what somebody’s eye is going to be attracted to you put a piece of charcoal
in with a bunch of marshmallows and what are you going to look at you’re gonna
look at the piece of charcoal you’re hardly going to notice the marshmallows
and vice versa you can throw a marshmallow onto a pile of coal and your
eye is going to be attracted to that marshmallow now it works also in the in
the world of color if you are in a yellow car for instance people are going
to notice your car faster than they just a split second faster which could be
crucial in avoiding a collision faster in a yellow car than in any other color
if your car is the only one on the road that has its lights on you are going to be noticed faster
that’s it’s all about so that’s that’s kind of deviating from the thing in
terms of concept but any other I think you get the idea that that’s a very
strong visual illness and you know something that that brought to mind
Bruce was why McDonald’s and a lot of the fast food chains focus on yellow and
red in all their advertising and their signage I think you just explained it
okay the second thing is you want your subject to be the largest and the
closest objects or object in the scene now look at Jackie and MySpace they’re
not well over here it maybe not as attractive is over there but our heads
and our hands are the most noticeable things in the entire photograph it’s
because we intentionally are larger things closer then
any other object in the sea in fact there’s there’s no real competition
behind it or beside us that was number two number three let’s see there was so
choosing the right subject and then one of greatest contrast largest and closer
that was number three number four is lines you want your strongest lines
Jackie would you put here she knew what to do all right
look at this line right here leads you right up to her face your attention is
essentially it’s going to wind up going into her eyes the window of the soul
look at this line right here that line kind of keeps you connected between the
two of us visually so think of lines in your photograph as being like highways
or roads that the eye follows into the scene and you want that terminating
point to be the subject in your getting some good examples of what I’m talking
about just by watching this little alright that was number four about minds
number five is if at all possible make sure that the only thing in focus is
your subject in this case it’s our faces unfortunately my fingers are still in
focus which is a distraction to you so if you can’t control the aperture of
your camera or some other way control what is in focus what is out of focus
make sure that what’s in focus is what you want your viewers to be looking at
Wow that’s only five things you got to remember that’s really cool would you
like to hear a real-life story about how I use those real quickly okay several
years ago I was hired by a roofing contractor to take some still photos of
all things well I took my letter and my camera and got up on the top of that
roof and I thought what am i doing up here how am I going to make any
interesting photos up here well I had been teaching students the dozens of
people these five concepts that I just told you
and I thought Bruce here is a great chance a great opportunity for you to
put these into practice right here right now very intentionally very consciously
well nobody was up there trying to distract me I could focus on what I was
doing I wasn’t in a hurry I looked and I saw how the light was falling on the
shingles different aspects about the roof it was a large house so there were
a lot of lines intersecting and going in different directions and basically every
shot that I took I was putting those five factors into play except for the
very first one thing the thing about making it interesting but somebody is
looking to buy from this Roofing Contractor would have been at that
moment interested in what a good roof looks like sure so and it turns out the
the contractor loved the photos they had me go out and do a couple more houses
for him and they didn’t need me anymore so it’s a great story making your point
absolutely we’re gonna ramp up here but I just want to end this
I wish thanking her phone call here that interrupted us so we will also point out
that we are making this video with my smart phone no fancy equipment no
special lighting no extra microphone although if we have some more
distracting background noises use a microphone but we really appreciate your
being here with us and Bruce thank you thank you ride survive bye everybody
okay I’m gonna come back on what they line make sure yeah we’re on full screen
here you know one other thing I thought I’d mention music or something gosh you
just never know I hope I am on here let’s see we got it looks like we still
have a sound anyway one other thing I wanted to point out to you if you
noticed in that video we were interrupted two times by phone calls
coming in on my smart phone and one of the things you can do to prevent that
happening is put your phone in airplane mode before you start doing the lab and
then that won’t interrupt your Facebook lab with phone calls because it was a
little distracting I don’t know if you caught it but I certainly did you know
where the phone call was coming in and I’m going have to stop the phone from
ringing so airplane mode takes care of that okey doke I hope you got some good
tips from Bruce in this video today and it will be valuable to you and get
started don’t wait for it to be perfect start making videos you don’t have to
start with laughs but why not laughs videos on Facebook perform better than
anything else you can do and it is free so start building your audience
organically if you want to join our pedal power
group then please go to PEDLL (PEDLL) power group on Facebook and submit the
join group and in most cases I will accept your membership into our group
thanks for joining us and again thank you Bruce
bye-bye
